The Importance Of Election
1 Thessalonians 5:9

Our adversaries, those who hate the doctrine of election and the God of election, often accuse us of overemphasizing the doctrine of election. The charge is ludicrous! How can anyone overemphasize a doctrine that is taught on every page of Holy Scripture? If anything, those of us who believe the gospel of Christ and preach it, say far too little about this glorious doctrine of Holy Scripture. Divine election is a doctrine of vital importance that ought to be mentioned often, meditated upon constantly, and preached everywhere. No doctrine of the Bible is more important or beneficial.

ELECTION EXTOLS THE CHARACTER OF GOD. It displays the sovereignty of God in choosing some, the justice of God in passing by others, and the love, mercy, and grace of God in determining to save any. Election says, "Grace is God's prerogative and God's work." ELECTION BRINGS SALVATION (Eph. 1:3-6). Election made salvation possible and made salvation certain. It shuts the door of heaven against none. Rather, it is election that opened the door. Election chose a people, provided a Savior, and secured all the blessings of grace and glory for all the chosen. ELECTION DEMANDS SUBMISSION. It shows us that God is not under our dominion, but that we are under his dominion. God is not standing before our bar. We are standing before his bar. The question is not, "Will you do something for God?" The question is, "Will God do something for you?" ELECTION PRODUCES HOLINESS. I did not say, "promotes," I said, "produces" holiness. God chose us to make us holy and without blame before him, and he will do it! ELECTION DESTROYS ALL THE DOCTRINES OF MEN THAT TEACH SALVATION BY THE WILL, WORKS, OR WORTH OF THE SINNER. Election lays the axe to the root of the tree and says, "It is not of him that willeth," "not of works, lest any man should boast." ELECTION MAKES US SEE AND FEEL OUR DEPENDENCE UPON THE TRIUNE GOD FOR SALVATION AND CAUSES US TO CONFESS WITH JONAH, "SALVATION IS OF THE LORD!"
